The largest airport in the world—the Beijing Daxing International Airport (unofficial name)—will open next year. Located in Beijing’s Southern district, the new airport is a way for the country to open up its doors even wider to the growing world of travelers from the East to the West.

For airlines like China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, this New Airport will become their new home base. It also will allow travelers to make easy connections for those who will be flying aboard the airlines part of the SkyTeam Alliance.

Extending to 7,534,737 square-feet, the terminal will feature gardens, 78 gates, modern hotel, and endless food options. And although the airport is the largest in the world, it has been designed to be quite efficient. By creating a central hub with walkways that connect all the terminal sections into one point, it will greatly reduce travel time—forget about those trams to take you from one terminal to another. The overall architecture gives it the right fluidity and openness that draws attention from near and far.

According to the late architect’s website, Zaha Hadid, “The overall symmetry of the airport terminal design, together with its flowing, interconnected forms, create a fluid composition which evokes the harmony and balance evidence in Chinese landscapes, while its colors and materials are an expression of visual language within traditional Chinese culture”.

And although the exact interior features have yet to be revealed, we can only imagine it will be grand.

The cost to build such a massive airport is about $11.7 billion USD, and although it will only handle 45 million people when it opens, it is set to expand to 72 million by 2025 and then 100 million soon after.
