If you’ve visited Berlin in the summertime, you know the outdoors are blooming and the city is buzzing with tourists. However, if you’re not afraid of cold weather, love the snow and the holiday spirit that comes with it, booking a trip to Berlin in December can be just as exciting. From the Christmas Markets and concerts to museums and brilliant New Year’s Eve celebrations, here are the top five things to do in Berlin in December.

December is much less touristy for Berlin, which makes seeing and exploring different museums easy and doable thanks to the small lines (or none at all). Although there are more than 170 museums and galleries in Berlin, some of our favorites are the Natural History Museum of Berlin that has the biggest staged dinosaur skeleton on Earth, the Jewish Museum Berlin featuring variable installations of the Jewish culture, or even the Charlottenburg Palace where you can learn about the royal life as it once was centuries ago.

Some of the best opera and concerts come around in December, which is why you should try to catch a performance while you’re there. This year, there’s the Berlin State Opera, Harlem Gospel Night featuring Donna Brown, Russian Circus on Ice performing The Nutcracker, or Christmas Oratorio J.S.Bach choir, which can be seen and heard in the Berlin Cathedral.

Christmas Markets

You may or may not know, but the whole Christmas Market concept was born in Germany, so you can expect some of the best ones in the world to be right there in Berlin. Luckily, there are over 70 to choose from, some of which include the very quaint Advent Bazaar at the Kaspar Hause, a British-themed one called Weihnachtsmarkt at St. George’s Church, or the Artisan Christmas market at Mexikoplatz for unique, handmade gifts.

Roncalli Christmas Circus

The circus comes to town in December, and if you’re in Berlin from the 12th to the 30th of December, you can catch a show featuring a timeless performance that’s perfect for both adults and children. The Roncalli Christmas Circus was established in 1976 and has been an ongoing tradition since then, which is why so many locals love to attend this once-a-year spectacle.

New Year’s Eve Festivities

Expect New Year’s Eve to be a fun-filled day and evening with parties throughout the city combined with a wonderful fireworks show. For an outdoor party, head to Brandenburg Gate, book a ticket to spend the evening celebrating at the Spindler & Klatt for some old-fashioned fun, or if you’re looking for something exclusive, you can check out the Karlsson Penthouse.
