With fresh snow falling, skiing destinations are gearing up for another season of skiers, snowboarders and other adventure seekers who love to be outdoors and on the slopes. Although there are plenty of world-famous getaways to get your snow-filled fun, there are some remarkable places that are just as amazing (if not better) than the most popular ones. So for those who want to get off the beaten path, here are some of our favorite, unique skiing destinations to try out this upcoming season.

Oukaimeden, Morocco

There’s more to Morocco than sand dunes, in fact, this African nation offers a ski resort in the Atlas mountains called Oukaimeden. The best times to ski here are January through March. Interestingly enough, the elevation is the highest in the entire continent of Africa at 8,530 feet. The best part is that not only can one ski but they’ll also be able to take in the breathtaking views of the desert at the same time, making it one of the most unique skiing destinations in the world.

Mount Etna, Sicily

Skiing on the sides of an active volcano? It’s possible, and for an unforgettable experience, Mount Etna in Sicily may be the perfect skiing destination. The resort is called Mount Etna Nicolosi and it has fourteen groomed trails to choose from, for all levels, with four separate lifts. There’s also a cross-country trail that you can embark on spanning a little over one mile.

Gulmarg, India

Another unique skiing destination is in Gulmarg, India, where skiers and snowboarders can take the slopes of the western Himalayas. One thing to note is that Gulmarg is not the luxury resort found in other parts of the world, and for the most part, the slopes there are for advanced skiers and snowboarders. Gulmarg is the unique skiing destination for those who like simple, inexpensive yet memorable experiences.

Northern Iceland

Iceland has much to offer outside of the northern lights, thermal baths and glaciers. From November to May, skiers and snowboarders have the option to go to one of five resorts in Northern Iceland where they can conquer the slopes. Northern Iceland also offers cross-country skiing, extreme sports and other cold-weather activities. Regardless of age or experience, Northern Iceland can accommodate everyone.
