Although many of us are stuck in the Northern Hemisphere where it’s cold, rainy and covered with snow, there are other places where the sun shines bright, the weather is warm and the only thing you need to layer on is SPF 30. As such, heading somewhere warmer is exactly what we may need. From Asia to South America to Australia and New Zealand, here are the top summer getaways to escape the winter.

Australia

Summer in Australia begins in December and goes on through February, making it an ideal destination to escape from the winter cold. Syndey has plenty to offer in the summer such as walking the Glow Worm Tunnel Walking Track, watching an opera or taking part in the Lunar Festival. Or, head to Melbourne for the Japanese Summer Festival, and the three-week Midsumma Festival featuring live street performances and cabaret shows. Since the weather is pleasant outdoors, you can also explore Australia’s less popular places such as the Snowy Mountains to go horseback riding, Rockingham Bay to swim with dolphins or Barossa Valley for wine tasting.

New Zealand

Just like Australia, New Zealand is another terrific summer getaway to escape the cold. With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time to sit at the semi-secluded beach called New Chums in Wainuiototo Bay or Rarawa Beach in Te Paki, which has the whitest sand. As for hiking, there’s Mount Cook National Park near Twizel or Mount Roy in Wanaka. Outside of the outdoorsy activities, Auckland has fantastic events such as the Festival of Colours where you’ll eat and throw color powder around or the Brazilian Day Festival, featuring a carnival for all to enjoy. You can also make your way to Queenstown to the Gold Coast Food & Wine Festival and the Woodford Folk Festival, featuring more than 2,000 international and local performers.

Brazil

South America is also another ideal destination for a summer getaway to escape the winter, and our top choice is Brazil. With Carnival in full swing in March, you’re bound to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Rio de Janeiro. But if you’re looking for a little more peace and quiet, we recommend Paraná to see the Iguassu Falls, considered one of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the world. Additionally, you can check out the Old City of Salvador, located on the coast of Brazil, for some colonial architecture and Afro-Brazilian culture.

Vietnam

Visiting Vietnam during the summertime can be brutal, but booking a vacation in the winter can be much more enjoyable, thanks to the cooler weather conditions that still allow you to wear summer clothes without breaking into excessive sweat. You can plan to visit Hanoi for the Japanese New Year Celebration or for the Co Loa Citadel Festival, where participants come together to honor King An Duong Vuong who constructed the Au Lac Kingdom, a celebration followed by games, dancing and eating. If Ho Chi Minh City is on your stopover list, then make sure to check out the festivities for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year called Tet. And if you’re a sand and water type of person, then the winter months can be the best time to go to the beach such as Long Beach or Star Beach in Phu Quoc or Nha Trang Beach in Nha Trang.

Philippines

The best time to visit the Philippines is during the winter, regardless if you’re in Manila to shop and eat or in Coron to swim, scuba dive and soak up the sun. If you love the water, then you can also make your way to one of the other Philippine islands. For instance, there’s Boracay for the whitest, powdery sand, Siargao for Lagoon tours, Mactan for cave diving, or Amanpulo for one the most luxurious resort experiences in the country. And if you’re up for a real, cultural and religious three-day festival, then head to Cebu for Sinulog, a celebration for Santo Niño (Catholic name for Child Jesus) featuring a three-day parade, non-stop eating and lots of dancing.
