Munich is one of the liveliest cities in Germany filled with a ton of activities and events in the spring. And with the weather ranging from the 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit, flowers in full bloom and the sun peeking its way through the clouds, one of our favorite times to go to Munich is in the spring.
From Springfest to Starkbierfest and Auer Dult to Maibaumaufstellen, here are the top events to check out in Munich this year from March through May.
Octoberfest but without the craziness of tourists? That’s Starkbierfest (Strong Beer Festival), which has been around even longer than Octoberfest, since the 1600s. From the 13th of March to the 5th of April, locals head to the Paulaner Brewery around 6pm until midnight and enjoy a variety of strong beers while hanging out with friends and listening to live entertainment. Other breweries around the city also host their own festivities, but the main event is at Paulaner Brewery. If you’re in Munich during Starkbierfest, we recommend you check out this local favorite, but make sure to book a table ahead of time as tickets sell out.
Similar to Starkbierfest, Springfest is another type of festival (albeit larger) where you drink beer, eat, dance and listen to a variety of live entertainment. From the 24th of April to the 10th of May, locals and travelers alike head to Theresienwiese where the festival is held to jump on rides, taste the best beer and enjoy the pre-summer outdoors with friends and loved ones. Tickets should be purchased ahead of time for overnight stays for the best price.
May Day is a large celebration all around Europe and in Munich, you can enjoy cultural festivities that include dancing, music, food and, you guessed it, beer. The festival is held on the 1st of May and centers around a maypole, which is a large pole about 65 feet tall that’s decorated in all types of ways, be it with paint or garlands and so much more. To experience the center of this celebration in Munich, head to Viktualienmarkt where cultural performances are held and live bands play.
Three times a year, a festival plus outdoor market takes place called Auer Dul. In the spring, Auer Dul sets up shop from the 25th of April to the 5th of May at Mariahilf Square where you can shop from a variety of vendors selling souvenirs, clothes, ceramics, books, jewelry, furniture and more, ride on the different attractions on the fairground, and drink beer in the beer gardens. Auer Dul has been an ongoing tradition since the early 1300s and brings in people together from all over, regardless of age.
Thre’s so much to do in Munich during the spring outside of seeing the traditional sites and museums. With all these events happening through the months of March through May, you’re bound to have a memorable trip there.
